Understanding couples therapy
What Is Couples Therapy?
Quick answer
Couples therapy is counseling for two partners together with a licensed therapist, focused on changing the patterns behind conflict and distance so you communicate better, feel closer, and handle hard topics as a team.
What couples come to us for
Communication breakdowns
Parenting conflicts
The same fight on repeat
Money and household stress
Trust and betrayal
ADHD and neurodiversity
Intimacy and desire
Feeling like roommates
You do not have to be on the edge of divorce to benefit. Many couples come in to strengthen a good relationship, prepare for a big transition, or get ahead of a pattern before it grows. Engaged? See premarital counseling.
69%
of conflict in relationships is perpetual, based on lasting differences in personality and needs.
That finding from the Gottman Institute is good news: healthy couples disagree too. The goal is not to never fight, it is to fight in a way that keeps you connected. Read our post on dreams within conflict.

Do you ever feel like you have a roommate instead of a partner?
Perhaps you find that the “spark” just isn’t there anymore. Maybe you find that you fight over and over again about the same things, or maybe your sex life isn’t where you want it to be. This may leave you feeling hopeless, lonely, or uncertain about what the future may hold. You are deserving of a relationship that feels safe, secure, and fulfilling. This is where couples therapy can be helpful in teaching communication skills and identifying unhealthy patterns.
Couples therapy will emphasize improved connection and communication in your relationship.
How we help
Our Approach to Couples Therapy
Research-based tools from the Gottman Method: managing perpetual problems, softening how hard conversations start, making repair attempts, and building friendship and fondness. See why dating your spouse matters.
Under most fights is a question: “Are you there for me?” We help you see the cycle you get stuck in, like one partner pursuing while the other withdraws, and replace it with safety. Read about the Relationship Attachment Model.
Practical skills you practice in session and at home: speaking without blame, listening to understand, and expressing needs. Our post from criticism to connection shows how.
After betrayal, secrecy, or pornography use, we help both partners heal: accountability, honest conversations, and steady steps back toward safety. See rebuilding trust and our pornography therapy.

FAQs About Couples Therapy
-
WHAT IF I WANT TO COME TO COUPLES THERAPY BUT MY PARTNER DOESN'TThis is common! There is still work that we can do to help you with your side of the relationship. Often time, the partner needs to see that therapy "works" before committing. We can still help you with your part of the relationship until your partner is ready.
-
IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE?Couples therapy is not a diagnosis that we can submit to your insurance company. Sometimes there are concurrent mental health struggles going such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, etc that we work on, while also doIng couples therapy, and insurance will cover that. If after assessment there isn't a diagnosis for us to ethically submit, we will let you know and discuss the payment options moving forward.
-
WILL IT SAVE OUR RELATIONSHIP?Therapy is no guarantee that your relationship can be saved. However, if two partners are willing to put in the work, take a good look at themselves, are humble and will practice what we talk about in therapy, things can improve!
-
IF I COME WITH MY PARTNER, WILL I GET A CHANCE TO TALK TO YOU ALONE?Yes you can! Often times, we structure our couples sessions the following way: session 1: intake as a couple session 2: individual session with partner 1 session 3: individual session with partner 2 session 4: back together again. This helps get a more thorough history of your life and relationship, which helps us create goals and a treatment plan keeping both you and your partner in mind. Please keep in mind during your individual session with your couples therapist, your therapist will not keep a secret from your spouse. You will receive more info about this in your intake paperwork
-
WHAT DO WE DO IN COUPLES THERAPY?In couples therapy, we will do what your relationship needs to improve. This often looks like going over your relationship history, talking about what you want to improve, and most importantly learning how to validate and listen to one another. If your relationship needs more specific support, your therapist will help you!
-
ARE WE JUST PAYING FOR SOMEONE TO LISTEN?Absolutely not! If you want someone to just listen, you can talk to your friends. Our couples therapists are trained to listen to what you and your partner are saying, and decipher where to go from there. So while at first it may look that way, your therapist is assessing and watching and listening to what you say and how you say it, to help give you feedback and guidance and support
-
How long does couples therapy take?It varies with what you are working on. Many couples see real change within a few months of weekly or every-other-week sessions, and some come back later for check-ins. We set goals together in the first sessions and review progress along the way.
-
Can couples therapy help after infidelity or betrayal?Yes. Many couples rebuild trust after an affair, secrecy, or pornography use. Therapy helps the hurt partner be heard, the other partner take responsibility, and both of you decide what the relationship needs to move forward.
-
Do you offer premarital counseling?Yes. Premarital counseling helps engaged couples talk through expectations, conflict, money, intimacy, and family before the wedding. Learn more on our premarital counseling page.
-
Is couples therapy only for couples in crisis? No. Many couples come to strengthen a good relationship, get through a transition like a new baby or a move, or change a pattern before it grows. Starting earlier usually makes the work easier.
